A&K Architectural Services is an architectural practice employing Architectural Technologist. Rob, our director is Chartered with CIAT, and the rest of the staff are working towards charter-ship.
What is an Architect?
Architect is protected title that can be only be used in the UK by someone who is registered with the Architects Registration Board. They may also be members of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) but this is not mandatory to call yourself an architect.
Anyone registered with with the Architects Registration Board must adhere to a professional code of conduct and hold adequate insurance.
Architects are able to offer a full range of services from design to construct drawings and specifications.
What is an Architectural Technologist?
Architectural Technologist are very similar to Architects however they are not registered with the Architects Registration Board. They do have professional membership with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and competency in architectural services must be proved to gain membership or MCIAT status.
As with the Architects Registration Board members of CIAT must adhere to a professional code of conduct and hold adequate insurance.
Architectural Technologist can offer the exact same full range of services of an architect.
So Whats the Difference?
As the services both Architects and Architectural Technologist are akin to each other it can be difficult to differentiate.
A broad attempt at this differentiation is:
– Architects have a greater focus on aesthetic and spatial qualities of a project.
– Architectural Technologists have a greater focus on the way building are constructed and the materials used within a project.
This doesn’t mean Architects do not consider materials and construction and Architectural Technologists do not consider aesthetic within design.
When choosing who to work with on a development it is more important to consider a Practice or Individual based on their own strengths and weaknesses rather than their specific accreditation.
